As 2016 comes to a close, most people who do media stuff, be it on Print, TV, Radio, or the Internet, tend to look back at the best and worst moments of the year. Others would give their Top 5, or Top 100 or whatever number they could come up with. So out of tradition, and it's something I haven't done before in MPX, I'll go for the latter and give my picks for Top 10. In this case, my picks for the Top 10 Best TV Anime of 2016.
In 2016 alone, there are over 220 new Anime shows that premiered in Japan. That doesn't include the other long list of long-running Anime like One Piece or Naruto. Then the numerous direct-to-video Anime or ones exclusively on the Internet, or the films. So that's a LOT of Anime out there in one year alone! I don't think there's a human on this planet who would be willing to binge-watch every Anime that came out this year. I certainly can't watch with my busy schedule, so I have to be pretty picky on what Anime I would watch in 2016.
And that's the beauty of Anime. Unlike Animation in other parts of world, particularly the West, Anime in Japan is divided into a series of categories, genres, and demographics. So there definitely is something for everyone out there. So looking back and filtering using only Anime that came on Japanese TV, I watched a grand total of 17. (actually it's 16, as one isn't really Anime, but I consider it personally as such, anyways)
So out of the 17, I picked 10 as my Top favorites. The ones that don't make the cut are, in random order:
- Dragon Ball Super
- Macross Delta
- The TV version of Gundam Unicorn
- Ninja Slayer
- Space Patrol Luluco
- Taboo Tattoo
- and Thunderbolt Fantasy. (I would've picked this as my top show of 2016, but because it's really not anime, and even though I say it is, it has to be bumped off)
Now without further ado, here is MPX's Top 10 Best TV Anime of 2016:

Obviously, I can't put this up on Youtube because Sunrise and Konami being such snoopy lawbrats, so I'm putting it up here. Enjoy this mashup of the Gundam Barbatos Lupus vs Hashmal scene from Iron-Blooded Orphans with music from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

CN Schedule January 2017
January will be filled with tons of premieres on the network. Rightfully so, as one of them will air its final episodes. Pokemon XYZ will also air its final episodes on the network as the next installment, Sun & Moon, will officially air on Disney XD. Gumball, meanwhile will finally air the rumored crossover with Miracle Star (aka Chinese Gumball) as well as the first episode featuring the new VAs. Surprisingly, despite its debut in December, there is no airdate for any episodes of Justice League Action.

Is The Plot of The Next DBS Arc Borrowed from Another Anime?
Last week in Japan, they celebrated Jump Festa, which is an annual expo celebrating currently running manga series under publisher Shueisha. Among those series is the Toyotaro version of Dragon Ball Super, serialized in V-Jump, Shueisha's Video Game Magazine.
One of the things Dragon Ball fans were hyped about at Jump Festa was the announcement of the next major arc in the series. And a teaser trailer of the next arc was shown, slated to take place Feb. 5th of 2017. The trailer features scenes from the manga version and is titled the "Universe Survival Arc", and it features the much anticipated multiverse tournament, with each universe represented by 10 fighters.
In Universe 7, Team Beerus consists of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin, Tenshinhan, Master Roshi, Piccolo, Majin Buu, and Androids 17 and 18.
However, what surprised many fans of Dragon Ball is the added stipulation in the tournament - the losing team has their Universe, and everyone in it, completely destroyed. What was thought as just a simple tournament to determine the best fighters in the Dragon Ball multiverse, is now a fight to be the sole surviving one. I don't know what creator Akira Toriyama was thinking when he came up with this arc, but the stipulation ruined it for me.
For one, it's pretty obvious that Universe 7 will be the eventual victor here. So there is no need to add the stipulation of the losing Universe being destroyed when we happen to know the eventual outcome. The chances of Universe 7 actually losing in this tournament is like trying to win the jackpot in the lottery. I would prefer the tournament to be a friendly one without such a stake as the one that's announced.
But what really got me disappointed in the stipulation was that the concept is nothing new and the first thing that popped on my head is that Toriyama may have borrowed it from another work with a similar concept. That work in question, is "Bokurano".
"Bokurano" or "Ours", is a manga series by Mohiro Kitoh that was later adapted into an anime series. The story is of 15 kids tasked to defend Earth from alien invaders using a giant robot. You might say "Ok, so it's just your typical mecha series. What does that have to do with Dragon Ball Super?". Well, there is a twist to this - the 'invaders' are actually kids as well from a different universe also given the same task, and the loser has his/her universe completely destroyed. Furthermore, the giant robots in these battles drain the life force of its pilots as a power source. By the end of the battle, regardless of who wins, the pilots are already dead and must be replaced with the next one.
Yes. "Bokurano" is a very depressing series. Some people even call it as the "Anti-Gurren Lagann" because of the countless universes, and its inhabitants, destroyed in this manner, and nothing can be actually done about it. Somehow I think Toriyama may have heard of Bokurano at some point and decided to use it as a basis for the upcoming arc.
Then again, it's possible this may all be just a coincidence and Toriyama just thought about it. It's not the first time we see a huge death count in Dragon Ball, but not in this massive scale. Another possiblity why this is happening is something I thought of after a brief discussion at a Facebook group about the Omni-King. I mentioned that the Omni-King, or Zen-Oh, however you want to call him, may not be as omnipotent as we thought him to be. Evidence of this is from the Future Trunks arc, where we know that the Omni-King has no dominion over alternate timelines, and thus, we now have two Omni-Kings in the Prime Timeline.
I also mentioned that, based on what we've seen so far about the Omni-King, that he is very simple minded and will just act on his feelings rather than think about what he is doing. The Future Omni-King could've just destroyed Zamasu and that would be end of it. But instead, he destroyed the entire timeline for the simple reason being he doesn't like Zamasu. So everyone else who's not involved in the conflict gets wiped out anyway out of the Future Omni-King's whim. This got me thinking if one of the Omni-Kings (I suspect the Future one) thought about adding the stipulation in the tournament for the hell of it. I would also guess that one of the Omni-Kings (again I suspect the Future version) may have some malevolent thoughts on doing this. But this is just a theory and nobody knows for sure.
What is certain is that the arc begins in February, and the current arc right now in the Dragon Ball Super anime is a lead up to that. It's worth noting by the way, that the trailer did not include any scenes from the Toei version, which I would assume Toei hasn't produced those episodes yet, and that the Toyotaro manga will skip the current arc of the Toei version and begin the Universe Survival Arc right away, in line with the intention for the Toyotaro manga to be ahead of the anime.
So again, I'm disappointed with the added stipulation, but it's less than 2 months away, so anything can still happen. I don't expect much storywise on how this turns out. This is Dragon Ball Super after all, and not Ajin or Lupin III. Nevertheless, we'll see how this goes.

Justice League Action - Shazam Slam Quick Thoughts
Quick Thoughts on the premiere episode of Justice League Action on Cartoon Network in the US:
- Though this is the first 3 episodes to air on CN USA, in the UK it's listed as Episodes 8-10.
- Shazam Slam is also an overarching story that shows the Justice League setting up the Watchtower, as well as fighting the Djinns mentioned in Power Outage.
- For some reason, Power Outage (one of the first two episodes that aired in the UK) is not featured in this special, since it deals with the first Djinn. So the order would be the first Shazam Slam episode, followed by Power Outage, and the rest of the Shazam Slam episodes.
- Despite the title, Shazam only appears in the first and last parts, and only briefly.
- Plastic Man is annoying, period.
- The choppy low-frame animation is becoming more common that it may not be visually appealing to some.
- Humor is good, but again it's an acquired taste for those who prefer a more darker DC show like the Bruce Timm universe.
- I pray Batman never calls out the battle cry "Justice League, Action!" again. I'd rather hear "Titans, Go!" than that.
I won't lie that I've been paying attention to the UK releases, and after 11 episodes, I've gotten accustomed to it. I can't say I'm excited for each new episode, but other than few bumps, I can't say it's bad either. It's definitely a far better investment than say, the Powerpuff Girls Reboot.

Alleged Promo Images of Disney's "Spider-Man" 2017
As you all know, Disney's Ulimate Spider-Man has finally come to an end (thankfully), only for the House of Mouse to announce that another incarnation simply titled "Spider-Man" is slated for an early 2017 release.
Below are alleged promo images of the upcoming series. I cannot personally verify if these are legit.

Open Letter to Nintendo RE: Creators Program
Dear Nintendo,
In spite of the criticism your company has received with regards to your Creators Program, I want to give it the benefit of a doubt and wish to participate in the program for however much it's worth. Part of the reason is among the list of games that's part of your program is The Legend of Zelda series, because I've realized that of all these years of playing every Legend of Zelda game I got my hands on, I NEVER finished a single one of them except the one for the Game & Watch in 1989. And I want to work with you guys as I plan to do a series of gameplay videos featuring all the Legend of Zelda games released prior to Ocarina of Time.
So all I want is to ask you guys a few questions regarding the program, and all I need is your contact email. Very simple and very straightforward. This is where the problem lies.
What you will be seeing are a series of screenshots I took when navigating to your website just to find your contact information so I can ask my questions. I personally would prefer recording the whole ordeal using software like 'Fraps' or 'CamStudio', but unfortunately, those programs tend to crash for whatever the reason. So I am stuck with using these screenshots, but please bear with me on this.
So I hit your "Contact Us" button and I have two options. Regardless of what part of the American continents that I choose, I end up on the same page, and I have to use it anyway because I don't know that much Japanese. The information on the English page does not answer any of my questions. So I still need to contact you guys.
So I hit your other "Contact Us" button again, and I'm taken to this page. None of them are part of what I want to ask you guys, so I hit "Corporate Questions" and there, I see your Nintendo Creators Program. Regardless of what Issue I have (which I honestly don't have at all until now), I MUST fill out this form. And I cannot do that because the first thing is asking is for my Nintendo Creators Program ID, which I-do-not-have!
I don't want to join your program just so I can ask my questions! I just want to ask a couple of questions regarding your Creators Program, so I could make consideration on whether or not I should join you guys. I cannot do that because I HAVE TO JOIN THE PROGRAM FIRST like I'm a fish wanting to bite a hook with no bait in it because you, Nintendo, would think I would think "Oh! Maybe if I let myself get hooked, I can see a lot of bait to eat!" That's dumb!
Why can't you be like your Japanese branch?! Going back to the selection and if I choose Japanese, all you need to do is enter your e-mail address, your subject, and your message, and your done! It's that simple! That's all I ever wanted! WHY CAN'T YOU EVEN PROVIDE SOMETHING LIKE THAT?! DID MARIO SUCKER PUNCH YOU ALL SO HARD YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT PART OF THE WORLD YOU'RE IN???
Contacting you on the phone doesn't help either because I have to wait more than 30 minutes and I'm on a pre-paid phone! I'm not going to waste my phone minutes waiting for what's like forever just to answer some simple questions!
So it is with great regret that I cannot engage in doing gameplays of the Legend of Zelda games with your Creators Program, because as far as that program is concerned, you-guys-suck! But given that you are such a mega-corporation that ignores the whims and complaints of a person like myself, I am at liberty to say:
You are an a sitting, gundam chewing, caw sacking, mutter forking pizza sheet. I'll still consider getting your Nintendo Switch, nonetheless. But as far as your Creators Program is concerned, seriously, you guys suck.
Sincerely,
Ryoga316

You are an a sitting, gundam chewing, caw sacking, mutter forking pizza sheet. I'll still consider getting your Nintendo Switch, nonetheless. But as far as your Creators Program is concerned, seriously, you guys suck.
Sincerely,
Ryoga316
Suspending Episode Reviews For Now
The last couple of days (weeks, actually) has been especially hard for me personally that I've chosen to suspend my episode reviews for all my recent anime at least until I've gotten a better hand of the situation. I will continue to do full series reviews, and I plan to do that for Ajin, Drifters, Keijo, and Diamond is Unbreakable. I'm also working on an incredibly long review of Bee & Puppycat after seeing the final episodes and, if time willing, I'll do my Top Animes of 2016, of which I may put it out either before or after New Year's Day.
So again, sorry for being quiet, but please look forward to my future posts (and videos) soon.

Dragon Ball Super Ep. 70 Thoughts
It is the third episode of stand-alone, slice-of-life/comedy episode of Dragon Ball Super. And this one I will give my seal of approval for funniest episode yet. It's essentially an episode that, for the most part, doesn't really make much sense. But the writers from Toei decided to say 'screw it' and just write whatever is going on in that episode and mess it up a notch.
The plot of this week's episode of Dragon Ball Super is Champa challenging Beerus to a Baseball game as part of strengthening relations between the two universes. In reality, Champa was plotting to use the Baseball game as a distraction while he steals all the food on Earth. This is in spite of the fact that there already IS an Earth on Champa's universe (see what I mean with the 'not making sense' part?). Beerus accepts because he wants to win it. More importantly, there is a huge feast by the game's end.
So it's a rematch of sorts between Team Beerus and Team Champa, with Vegeta and Trunks joining Team Champa to fill in for the now imprisoned Frost and the missing Hit (who will appear in the next episode). Yamcha fills in for the missing Monaka. Trunks, Krillin, and Gohan also join in Team Beerus. Unfortunately, it seems Yamcha is the only one besides Whis and Vados who know a thing or two about Baseball.
It's a common meme among Dragon Ball fans of using Yamcha as the weakest of the Z Fighters and getting the butt end of jokes. It seems Toei caught wind of this and used it to the fullest, as Yamcha takes the receiving end of all the shenanigans everyone is doing in the game, with hilarious results. Yamcha's 'sacrifice', also gave Team Beerus the win.
Now because this is an episode that will not be featured in the Toyotaro manga, the Toei staff was totally lax in terms of the animation and writing of the episode, which can be seen with the naked eye. But I honestly don't mind this as you're not supposed to take this episode seriously, anyways. Besides, I had such a good time watching this episode that I wish Bandai Namco capitalize on it by making a Baseball game featuring various characters from Shonen Jump, with elements of the Kunio-kun/River City Ransom games for comedic effect. Having Yamcha break the fourth wall is a nice touch, as it's something rarely seen in a Dragon Ball series.
The Baseball episode definitely trumps the Arale episode from last week and is just a whole bucket of fun and laughter, of which I enjoy a lot. I do saw some people hating on it because it's not a serious plot-based episode, which is a shame because those people think Dragon Ball is like Batman or something, when it does not forget its roots as a light-hearted adventure series. Nevertheless, next week's episode features the return of Hit and is on really serious business regarding Goku. So if you want your action back, you're gonna get it.

Keijo Eps 7-10 Recap & Thoughts
Here's the four episode recap and thoughts on Keijo. It's supposed to be three, but I had to run into a family emergency that made me drop my work entirely until that was taken care of. Now I'm fine for the time being. But this isn't a personal blog, so let's get to it.
Just a fair warning, this blog will feature quite an overuse of the word 'butt'. Honestly, I keep seeing how ridiculous this article is with so many use of that word. But because this is Keijo and Butt Attacks are quite the norm,.....
We begin with Episode 7 where Nozomi continues her training under "Missile Lady" Kyoko Shirayuki and we get a look at some of the training regimen designed to strengthen the athlete's assets. Around halfway through, in order for Nozomi to have a more effective use of her "Vacuum Butt Cannon", she needs to learn the "Butt Flash" first. To have her butt ready to learn the technique, she must be able to pull up turnips using only her butt (though to be honest, it's more to do with her waist doing the work than her actual butt). As with your typical Shonen anime, Nozomi does figure out how to pull the turnips successfully.
Despite Keijo being a popular sport, only two major schools exists in Japan - The Seitouji School in the West portion (where Nozomi and the gang represent), and the Suruga School in the East. The Elite's training is part of the preparation for the upcoming "East-West War" event, as well as the lead up to the next major arc of the story. The episode ends with Mio Kusakai's groupie, Usagi Tsukishita, challenging Nozomi in a mock battle.
Before I go to Episode 8, I want to say, as much as I really would like to enjoy Episode 7, because it has quite a good writing there for a training episode, I was totally turned off by the numerous design errors. It's not as bad as the animation errors from Dragon Ball Super, but they are quite noticeable in this one and it simply ruins the whole experience. I would think Studio Xebec chose to let these happen to save the Sakuga (Quality) animation in the major episodes ahead. That being said, Mio and the other minor characters are getting enough spotlight to make them just as likable as the Main 4.
There's another thing about this series overall that really annoys me, and that the Keijo matches are called 'races'. Japanese language tends to borrow words both foreign and domestic to describe something that is totally different than its intended meaning. For example, 'Jusu' based on the English word 'Juice', refers specifically in Japanese to fountain drinks like Coca-Cola and not your typical fruit juice. Even the Japanese phrase "sumimasen" which means "I'm sorry", or "Excuse me", can also be used to reply to someone's invitation saying you accept. So in Keijo 'race' refers to the Keijo match and not exactly meaning you're racing someone like a runner's race.
The next episode pits Nozomi against Mio's groupie, Usagi (or rather, her stalker as she is so ultra-obsessed with Mio). Usagi turns out to be quite nimble and jumpy as her namesake, which means 'Rabbit' in Japanese. Also, I could not help but notice Usagi's pupils are heart-shaped. Unless I'm mistaken, a character with heart-shaped pupils often indicate they want to do monkey business, if you know what I mean.
Nevertheless, we got to see Nozomi's new technique, the "Butt Flash", which as the name suggests, are quick attacks using her butt, almost comparable to a quick jab from a Jeet Kune Do practitioner. And then another move called the "Meteor Hip", which is one big sitdown that knocks out your opponent. Nozomi's win carries the unintended consequence of Usagi now turning her obsession towards our main heroine, though she refuses to admit it.
We get to learn a bit about the so-called "East-West War" in that the East has been winning since it began a decade ago. Now the East is calling for the West to be absorbed by the former to create a unified school. This of course, forms the tension between the two teams, not to mention the East being unforgiving and cruel (stereotypical since they are supposed to be the antagonists). The East-West War is a 4-on-4 team battle, and our Main 4 is divided into 3 teams
The first battle begins in Episode 9 with Sayaka among the members. And like other Shonen anime such as Naruto, we get a flashback on a character's motives. In this one, we get to learn more about Sayaka leaving the Miyata Judo Dojo for Keijo, which results in the estranged relationship with her father.
I could not help but have a smile on my face and even laugh a lot because of the numerous butt attacks this episode has made, as well as the gratuitous amount of fan service. The episode also has a clever way of exposing certain parts of the female anatomy while bypassing the censors. Our British-Japanese lesbian Mio Kusakai takes the cake here as she takes pleasure to the next level with her "Queen's Bounty" and "Butt Vibrations of Love" attacks. Seriously, why has this series never gotten any doujinshi yet?!
But this is Sayaka's episode and we get to see her own version of Dragon Ball Z's Kaioh-ken with her W-Acceleration: Full Purge, and later a variation of a Judo throw using her nipples. This gives her the seal of approval by her parents, which pretty much resolves her personal conflict.
With Sayaka's team winning the first match, the 2nd one, which covers Episode 10, is very much predictable in which the 2nd West team, wherein Non and Kazane are members, would lose, leaving the third and final match where Nozomi takes part and covering the final episodes. I love the scene where the West girls offer their butts to Kazane for her Scanning Hand technique, and the way they do is a pure fantasy for the male viewer. This episode also shows Kazane being more than a strategist and can fight really well. But like I said earlier, this is a predictable match in which the East would win, though only by a hair. I'd like to enjoy this one, but it too suffers from animation and character design errors that just ruins the episode.
The final episodes of the season will pit our main heroine Nozomi in the final match. I'm expecting Studio Xebec to really pull the Sakuga on these episodes this time because this series is just too good to be bogged down by some subpar animation quality. I hear that Keijo has become the third viewed anime on Crunchyroll, behind Yuri!!! on Ice and Drifters. I honestly agree because Keijo is more than just a fan-service anime series, it's actually a really good one.
