Suicide Squad Movie Review

So it's been a bit over 3 weeks ago since Suicide Squad debuted in theaters in the US. News of the film has gone to almost a halt. Last time I checked, it earned a box-office gross of nearly $640 million. Which is why director David Ayer thanked the fans for making the movie a success, in spite of the low review score. Now whether or not Suicide Squad IS a success depends on how Warner Bros. defines it. After all, you still need to account for the promotions, distributions, the investors, etc. And Warner Bros. won't be happy if all they get out of it is mere pocket change.

By comparison, James Cameron's Avatar costs around an estimated $500 million in both production and marketing, and it earned a total gross of over $2 billion. That's well over $1.5 billion in revenue. And that's how every movie studio wants - a LOT of money for them to swim through with whatever movie they make, and nothing less.

But I'm not here to discuss as to whether or not Suicide Squad was a financial success. Rather, it's whether or not the movie itself is good in the first place.

Since it's been three weeks now, I would assume you already know of the movie's plotline. Otherwise, let me give a brief summary.

After the events of Batman v Superman, the US Government wants to find a countermeasure against the likes of Superman and other metahumans. Amanda Waller then forms Task Force X, the code name for the Suicide Squad, for this specific role. One of the members, the Enchantress, isn't exactly keen in being part of the team, and goes rogue and creates a end-of-the-world scenario. The Suicide Squad are then tasked to deal with the threat.

There is a LOT of wrongs with this movie. First off, the idea that the Suicide Squad is formed to take down the likes of Superman. One problem - NONE of its members are even remotely capable of taking down Superman! In fact, the majority of them lack any superpowers at all!

I'm willing to listen to any DC Enthusiast out there who can provide a solid argument that Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, and Katana, can defeat Superman on their own - WITHOUT the use of Kryptonite! If anything, the Enchantress is the only member of the group remotely capable of fighting Superman because of the latter's inability to defend against magic - except the Enchantress is the main antagonist of this film.

And that's another problem. When the Enchantress begins her end-of-the-world scenario, none of the DC Superheroes are anywhere to be found. One can say Batman was too busy forming the Justice League, but c'mon! Forming the Justice League is more important than stopping a global threat? If the solo Wonder Woman movie had her doing something during the events of Suicide Squad, I'd get it. Except, the trailer for the Wonder Woman movie shows that it's set during World War I and not in the present day. Flash is also missing despite the fact there's a cameo of him in the early parts of the Suicide Squad film. So again, there are indeed some DC Heroes running about, but for some reason, they're not responding to the threat of the Enchantress.

If Deadpool were a DC character, he'd simply pop up and explain Warner Bros. couldn't afford the charactes into the film, and that would've been the end of it. But this is supposed to be a serious film (despite it's attempt to be a little more positive in tone), so.....

And then there's several scenes where the Enchantress's monsters attack and the US Army can't even land a dent on them with their assualt rifles. But Deadshot's pistols, and Harley's bat? No problem! They die instantly! I mean, what the bloody hell, man!

It's been noted that reshoots were made in the movie to give it a slightly more positive look, and to show the Suicide Squad aren't exactly THAT bad. That's a whole lot of BS. The members of the Suicide Squad are villains. In a situation like this, they HAVE to act their roles. It seems what the movie is trying to do is become a counterpart to Marvel's Guardians of The Galaxy. This is more evident when they play tracks like Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", just give that same vibe as "Hooked on A Feeling". That just does not work!

Yes, the Guardians of The Galaxy start off as a ragtag group of bad guys, but the narrative transitions them to become heroes and stayed that way ever since. Suicide Squad being heroes? No. Just No.

I personally prefer the idea of the Suicide Squad being villains/anti-heroes performing Black Ops, allowing them to maintain their character without having to step into the so-called 'hero zone'. I'm suspecting the reason the change in tone, apart from making it more positive, is that Will Smith has never played a villain like Deadshot before, and even if he did, he's awfully bad at it.

The only saving grace for this movie are Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis, who play Harley, Joker, and Waller, respectively. They play their roles almost flawlessly and the subplot of The Joker searching for Harley is even more interesting than the main plot itself! I also believe this is why the movie is getting money coming in because these three characters are that likable. How many have watched the movie because of Will Smith as Deadshot vs Jared Leto as the Joker? I rest my case.

So besides Harley, Joker, and Waller having a commanding presence in the film, Suicide Squad is like watching a B-movie where you pay little attention to and just play Angry Birds on your phone. In the larger scale of things, the movie doesn't really add anything to the overall narrative of the DC Expanded Universe. To put it more bluntly, Suicide Squad is nothing more but filler material until the Justice League movie comes out. There are far worse movies than this, but you can basically just skip this one entirely unless you want to see the trio I mentioned earlier, or if you're one of the hardcore DC fans. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give Suicide Squad a 2 out of 5.

Emoji Movie Teaser(?)

In case you don't know, Sony is making a movie about Emojis and this is one of their promos.

Now you know why Sony's jacking up the price of PS+ accounts - to make up for the fact that this is another movie that's gonna cause another loss for them, money-wise (Ghostbusters was bad enough).

Oh, and by the way, Russia beat them to it by already having an animated series about Emojis.

Steven Universe - Mindful Education Review

The Steven Universe episode "Mindful Education" is the first episode that features the collaboration between the staff of Steven Universe, and Studio TRIGGER. That is not exactly true as others as hyped it for. For one, Studio TRIGGER, the team behind Kill la Kill, Space Patrol Luluco, and Little Witch Academia, wasn't involved in the making of this episode. Instead, it features just one of their members, Key Animator and Animation Director Takafumi Hori, who works on the episode as a guest animator, and as co-writer and co-storyboarder. It is not like in the case of how Studio 4C handled the anime portion of the Gumball episode "The Fury", or when Tatami Galaxy's director Masaaki Yuasa and his staff did the episode "Food Chain" in Adventure Time from story to animation.

Besides working for TRIGGER, Hori also did a number of Anime works not from TRIGGER, such as Season 2 of Space Dancy, Samurai Champloo, the modern classic movie Summer Wars, and even episodes of Naruto: Shippuden.

In Mindful Education, Steven and Connie start their latest round of training, this time as Stevonnie. However, Connie isn't in her best, and it greatly disrupts their training. Apparently, Connie instinctively Judo flips a kid in school when the latter accidentally bumps into her. It is here that Garnet, in a musical number, provides insight on how Fusion actually works and how to maintain it for a longer period of time.

Connie later apologizes to the kid and is in a much better mood that she's eager to train some more. However, Steven still struggles with his own issues after not able to help Bismuth, Jasper, Eyeball, and learning the truth about his mother, and results with Stevonnie falling off the Training Ruins and splitting off. Connie consoles a distraught Steven and they fuse in time to use the latter's floating ability to land safely to the ground, ending the episode. However, if you're lucky to get to the end credits, you will notice the ending theme is replaced with a dark, ominous background music, almost as though it's a foreshadowing that Steven and the gang may be facing an even darker circumstance than what they've been so far.

Basically, Mindful Education is what the "Know Your Fusion" episode regarding Smoky Quartz is supposed to be - a deeper look as to how Fusion works. Though, for the most part, it's what fans have already figured out for quite some time. For Fusion to work and to maintain for a long period of time, the two must be in synch with one another. If ever one of them has any doubts, the Fusion breaks. We've seen this time and time again with Stevonnie. So the whole number by Garnet and Stevonnie is pretty much meant for those who haven't learned how Fusion works at this point.

That being said, it does question how Malachite was able to maintain her form for so long when Lapis never wanted to fuse in the first place. We know that part of why Lapis agreed to it is to imprison Jasper in the ocean, but also, as per Jasper, that she is "a monster". So not only is Lapis perhaps the most powerful of all the Gems we know so far, but she may also potentially have this destructive nature inside of her. So this subdued nature of Lapis, and Jasper's pride for power, is likely one factor how Malachite maintained her form for a very long time.

And then there's the time when Jasper forced a fusion with a corrupted Gem in "Earthlings", and was able to stay in that form until Smoky Quartz beat her down to break the fusion. This leads me to believe that not only is a Forced Fusion between Gems possible, but also, the fusion, forced or not, can be maintained if one of the participants is the dominant one and has the iron grip on that dominance.

So pros for Mindful Education - strong character development for Steven, Connie, AND Stevonnie; a good musical number by Estelle featuring Stevonnie's Voice Actress AJ Michalka; great animation by Hori (IF you have a good eye to notice it); and a foreshadowing in the end credits.

Cons? Well, nothing really other than the that we already know how Fusion works and the episode just lays it out. And perhaps that Studio TRIGGER didn't really worked on this episode the way Studio 4C did with Gumball in "The Fury", or Masaaki Yuasa with Adventure Time in "Food Chain". But these are just so minor and I do hope that one day, TRIGGER would do an entire episode of Steven Universe (and maybe Gumball, too), and not just Hori.

Word has it this episode was animated by Studio TRIGGER (Kill la Kill), but it's not exactly true. It is, however, co-storyboarded by Takafumi Hori, who was the Animation Director for TRIGGER's "Little Witch Academia" and "Kill la Kill", as well providing Key Animation for "Space Patrol Luluco". Hori's other works as Key Animator and Animation Director include other non-TRIGGER works like Space Dandy Season 2, Samurai Champloo, Azumanga Daioh, Summer Wars, and even Naruto Shippuden.

When A Disney Song End Up Creepy

Cover of The Little Mermaid's "Kiss The Girl" - done in Minor Key. The tone is so low the whole song ends up sounding awfully dark and creepy......and I love it!

Viacom To Lose Big Money from Paramount (may affect Nickelodeon)

This is pretty much more on the business side and is remotely tied to animation at all, but Nickelodeon is under ownership of Viacom. And when something goes wrong, like the corporation losing money, it will have a ripple effect.

Quote from The Street:
"Viacom executives who had been negotiating with potential buyers to sell a 49% stake in its Paramount studio, however, suddenly have a much shakier asset to peddle.

The studio, which some analysts said could fetch as much as $5 billion, is having one of the worst summers in recent Hollywood history and could lose as much as $560 million through 2017, according to one analyst.

The company's Paramount studio began the summer with the June release of the big-budget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which generated a relatively puny $81.5 million in ticket sales that the company blamed for the studio's $26 million loss in its fiscal second quarter. On Friday Paramount releases another big-budget movie, a remake of the iconic 1959 film Ben-Hur (itself a remake) that Hollywood insiders already forecast will open with a thud.

The biggest disappointment for investors, however, is Paramount's apparent inability to send its flagship Star Trek movie franchise into warp drive. The studio spent $185 million to make the latest installment, Star Trek Beyond, which stars Chris Pine as a younger Captain Kirk, and another $120 million to market it.

Released on July 22, the movie has so far generated $142 million in domestic ticket sales, according to movie site Box Office Mojo, 60% less than the 2013 installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, despite the benefit of higher ticket prices three years later."
That's a lot of money lost for the movie studio. It doesn't help either that Paramount is even alienating its Star Trek fans by making a set of rules for their fan films. As a former Trekker, I would say Paramount killed their franchise and gone are the glory days of the original series, Next Generation, and Voyager.

What does this mean for Nickelodeon? Maybe nothing at all, or maybe the loss could affect that network in terms of their annual budget. If the latter's true, expect Nick to make more lame teen-dramas and sticking to Spongebob yet again.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters 3DS Trailer

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters is the latest entry to the Digmon franchise. As the tittle suggests, the Digimon featured would be coming from the current generation of mobile devices like smartphones. Surprisingly, the game itself will be for the 3DS with a manga and anime series coming this October.

Gumball Bomb (8/14-8/19) Highlights and Review

So after 5 days, the Gumball Week of Premieres has officially ended. It was pretty good, overall, with one episode I particularly did not like. So I'm going to give highlights of the 5 episodes.

First, we have The Roots. At the local pet store, Darwin gives a sigh as he looks at some fishes. This causes the Wattersons to assume Darwin wants to return to his natural habitat. But rather than do that, they decided to do some pretty zany ways to make Darwin feel at home - by doing the things fish do. When that didn't work, they ultimately threw him into the local pond and as the Wattersons cry their way back home, Darwin had to fight his way through traffic towards the Wattersons and explain to them all he really wanted was a new Aquarium to replace his fish bowl by 'guilt tripping' them. He didn't get it, by the way as he lost to Nicole's 'guilt tripping' of sacrificing everything just to get the aquarium.

You know, I think this is the first time the entire Watterson family just went total bonkers over a misunderstanding. Normally, we would see at least one of them being the voice of reason. But in this case, they all went out of their way very, very badly just to figure out what's wrong with Darwin when they could've just asked.

The Blame is one of my three favorite episodes of this week, as it parodies the Video Game and Book mediums in the style of South Park. Billy tries playing video games for the first time and it caused such a ruckus that his mom called for a ban on video games as it warps the minds of children. Gumball tries and fails to prove otherwise, forcing all the Elmore kids to read books. They then do a musical in the style of "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared", with the books being just as mind warping as the games themselves, which caused so much chaos that, instead of lifting the ban on video games, every book in Elmore gets burned to the ground.

Unintentionally, The Blame can also be seen as a social commentary towards the criticism of Video Games, and how books, despite having as much graphical descriptions, if not more so, within the narrative of text, gets a free pass. Perhaps coincidentally, The Blame can also be seen as a response to the accusations made by groups like Feminist Frequency towards the Video Game Industry.

The Slap is somewhat of the spiritual sequel to The Hug and The Awkwardness. But instead of Gumball dealing with Hot Dog Guy, it's Tobias. Tobias started getting a reputation of giving everyone a high-five, followed by a slap in the butt - except Gumball. Feeling left out, Gumball is determined to get Tobias to slap his butt, by ANY means necessary. After all the crazy attempts and failing to do so, we learn that the reason Tobias never slaps Gumball in the butt is because he figured Gumball wouldn't like it. Gumball insists in order to be included, and when Tobias finally does so, guess what? Gumball didn't like it at all.

I have to comment that this is perhaps the raunchy-est episode of Gumball as butt slapping is considered a sexual act, and I'm surprised that Cartoon Network is ok with this. If the show and this episode were under Nickelodeon or Disney, it would've been banned, outright.

The Detective is my least favorite of the episodes as it is a parody of crime-solving shows like CSI and Law & Order, of which I'm not a fan of. Anais's doll, Daisy, turns up missing. So she uses her detective skills and monologue to find out what became of her and who is responsible. It was obvious from the very beginning that Gumball and Darwin were responsible and they both had their comeuppance instead of a twist in the plot. I do, however, like the idea of the duo being so high in sugar as sort of a metaphorical representation of being high on drugs.

The Fury is the 'creme de la creme' of this week's episodes and the most anticipated one of this year. The episode uses a lot of elements from The Karate Kid movies, Dragon Ball, and of course, Kill la Kill.

It begins with Nicole meeting up with her childhood friend, Yuki Yoshida, Masami's mom, who aggressively harasses Nicole to get her to accept her duel. Nicole adamantly refuses to accept the challenge, despite the numerous shameful situationns placed on her that's reminiscent from Regular Show. Masami explains that as kids, Nicole and Yuki were trained under the same school and eventually fought each other at the local martial arts tournament, to which Nicole won. Yuki then spent many years in Japan training for her rematch. She finally gets Nicole to act after threatening to fire the latter from her job and re-possessing the Watterson Home.

As Nicole and Yuki engage in a Dragon Ball/Kill la Kill-style duel at the school gym, the kids got caught in the crossfire, forcing the two to work together to save them. Yuki cries saying she was jealous of Nicole's achievements as the winner of the tournament, and as a mother, wheras Nicole is jealous of Yuki being a rich bastard. The two made up and went home with the kids, who remain completely shocked at what happened - and the school gym totally wrecked.

I honestly wasn't expecting The Fury to have any comedy elements at all. But it did had some funny moments and I like how Richard tries to cheer up a depressed Nicole. The entire Nicole/Yuki fight, animated by Studio 4C, lasted around 3 minutes. Although the fight sequence wasn't as thrilling compared to One Punch Man, for example, it was overall pretty decent. And it's pretty obvious at this point Nicole will get even more fans now thanks to her Anime-style design.

I would put The Fury, The Blame, and The Slap tied with a rating of 4 out of 5, followed by The Roots with a rating of 3, and The Detective, my least favorite, with a 2. And despite me not liking The Detective, overall the week of episodes of Gumball is great, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Nerdist Interivew Man of Action on Mega Man Reboot

In case you don't get the memo, Man of Action (Ben 10, Ultimate Spider-Man) is tasked to produce a cartoon remake of the Mega Man franchise slated to air on Disney XD in 2017. The Nerdist conducted an interview with the team on developing the series.

Personally, I'm not excited. I love Man of Action during the first season of Ben 10 and Generator Rex. But lately, not so much, especially after Ultimate Spider-Man.....
