Summer of Steven - Crack The Whip Review

Crack The Whip; Give the past a Slip; Step on a Crack; Break your Momma's Back; This episode continues right where Gem Hunt left off.

After learning that Jasper was hunting corrupted Gems, Pearl and Garnet head back to the Snowy Region in the North to find and deal with her.

No, they're not dealing with the Night Walkers. They're dealing with Jasper.

While they're off looking for Jasper, Amethyst is tasked to stay behind to look after Steven and Connie. The latter duo then decide to spar with each other to hone their skills while Amethyst finds the whole thing boring and wants to do something else to pass the time, and reminds Steven and Connie that you can't be prepared for everything.

Amethyst, in her own words, "let's loose" with the others all around Beach City. As the sun sets, the trio were swimming at the beachside when Jasper and the Corrupted Gems suddenly arrive, revealing she is building an army of Corrupted Gems under her command for a grudge match with Steven, whom she still addresses as Rose. Amethyst took care of one of them, but is easily defeated by Jasper, who mocks Amethyst for being weak when she is a soldier-class. In desperation, Steven and Connie fused to Stevonnie and with the help of Lion, battled and defeated Jasper and the other Corrupted Gem. Amethyst regenerates in her new form, but the battle was already over, as Jasper retreats, promising she will return. This, combined with the loss to Jasper, totally de-moralizes Amethyst.

As a lot of fans have been making fanarts for a long time now, this is Stevonnie's first real battle, and with Lion joining in, creating the ultimate Battle Gem-Human-Lion team-hybrid whatever its called. But it was awesome, at least for a couple of minutes. Again, because of the 11-minute format, the fight between Stevonnie and Jasper was extremely short after all that build-up. As a consolation, not only was Jasper around for much longer, but the fight between her and Amethyst was also longer, and very intense and brutal - in a kids show kind of way.

I mean this episode shows how much Jasper really beats the living daylights out of Amethyst before poofing her out. I really don't recall something this intense in the show ever. The closest would be the Season 1 finale battle between Garnet and Jasper, but because Garnet was performing "Stronger Than You" during the fight, I wouldn't call it an intense action scene, exactly.

Obviously, Amethyst's loss to Jasper and realizing Stevonnie was able to defeat Jasper easily without her help affects her character greatly, and will be explored in the next episode. In fact, the episode title for tomorrow is appropriately named "Steven vs Amethyst".

Aside from the very short Stevonnie/Jasper fight scene, the only thing I didn't like about the episode are the character designs. Obviously, different storyboarders have a different interpretation of the characters design-wise, but here, they look slightly, SLIGHTLY less appealing visually.

I do like the fact that Jasper was around for much longer, and though right now, she is a recurring villain that ends up getting beaten by Steven and the gang, at one point in the battle, Stevonnie demands that Jasper apologize. So this has a bit of a hint that eventually Jasper would redeem herself and join Steven's side. And speaking of Jasper, whatever became of those Rubies? It seems to me that they're not doing a very good job of finding Jasper as we never heard of them, since.

Anyway, in spite of the minor hiccups, this is a great episode and I love the action. The next episode we can expect to be a cooldown before the eventual arrival of Bismuth on Thursday, which will end the third week as it is a two-parter. And just in case you don't get the memo, the third week will end on a Thursday instead of a Friday because of the two-parter. So until then, see you all in tomorrow's episode.
