Milo Murphy's Law x Phineas & Ferb

“And what’s really cool is that — in my mind, anyway — Mikey Murphy just lives a couple of neighborhoods over from Phineas and Ferb. And given that these two animated series will have a similar sort of look and design... Well, who knows? If Mikey Murphy’s Law is successful, maybe a few years further on down the line, we could do a crossover episode where the Mikey Murphy characters get to interact with the Phineas and Ferb characters. I’d love to get the chance to do a show like that.”

- Dan Povenmire on the Milo Murphy's Law's possible ties to Phineas & Ferb

It's worth noting that this was when the show was still in its early stages and thus was first called "Mikey Murphy's Law" before the name was changed to Milo. Also the assumption that MML will be just as successful and as long as P&F.

I'm not saying whatever Dan Povenmire said with regards to MML's ties to P&F are real (granted he said 'in his mind', and doesn't officially say it is within the same universe), but given the recent restructuring of Disney's Animation Studio to save money and earn larger profits, for MML to address within the show itself to be tied to P&F and to have a potential crossover, it has to be just as successful and just as long. Otherwise, like Wander Over Yonder, MML will only be around for 2 seasons. To date, Star vs The Forces of Evil is the only animated series under Disney to go beyond 2 seasons.

Taboo Tattoo Anime Review

After 12 grueling episodes, I am relieved that Taboo Tattoo is finally over - that is until the end credits show what appears to be scenes from Season 2. Either that or they (the animation staff) are merely trolling.

Before I give my final thoughts on this anime, a full disclosure that I have NEVER read the manga, which the anime is based off on. So I cannot compare the two. I will only judge the series from the anime only.

As I said before in my first impressions review of this series, Taboo Tattoo is based off the seinen manga of the same name by Shinjiro, with the animation done by JC Staff, who have a number of successful animes under their belt, such as Slayers, Ikkitousen, and Food Wars. But when it comes to Taboo Tattoo, what seemed like a cool concept and having a lot of potential to be a great series among the likes of Attack on Titan and One Punch Man, ends up becoming one of the WORST animes I’ve seen in recent memory.

It wasn’t always like that, initially. The first four episodes of Taboo Tattoo show a lot of promise with its setting and plot - Two factions, America and the Kingdom of Selinistan, battle over Tattoos that when applied to a person, gives them superhuman powers. Caught in this conflict is Seigi Akatsuka, a martial arts guy who has a strong sense of justice, hence his name, as "Seigi" means "Justice" in Japanese. In fact, Seigi's name is supposed to be read as the English word "Justice".

While I'm aware it's a common trope to give Japanese Pun names, this one doesn't seem to work at all, and for the sake of simplicity, Seigi's name is just that - Seigi, and never "Justice".

And that's just the start of one of the many problems with Taboo Tattoo, but we'll get to that in a bit.

Going back to Seigi, for a guy who is named "Justice" and a strong sense of "Justice" (you can see what Taboo Tattoo is trying to portray here), Seigi's martial arts skills leave much less to be desired. That is until he was given the Tattoo known as the "Void Maker", considered the most powerful Tattoo of them all (how cliché), that allows him to create black holes to disintigrate anything it touches totally. You'd think for a guy who can create black holes, he'd be a force to be reckon with against other Tattoo users. But noooope! Seigi gets his ass kicked and impaled so many times you wonder how the hell he's still alive through all that.

But the point where Taboo Tattoo becomes, and I will dare say it, an "absolute piece of sh*t", was in episode 5. Sudden cut to back and forth scenes that totally ruin the pace, the tension and build up ruined again and went down the hole when a gag is thrown in the middle of the fight, and then it just stops and the second half acts as though the first half of the episode never happened, and it's a slice-of-life comedy now. Worse, Aryabhata, or Arya for short, who is seen as a bloodthirsty, cruel, Mary Sue antagonist, pops out of nowhere and flirts with Seigi, and all of sudden it becomes a harem anime!

Am I supposed to laugh when they introduced Colonel Sanders in the show? I kid you not! There is a character named "Colonel SanderS" and even looks the part. In fact, not one episode of Taboo Tattoo even made me perk a smile with its comedy, as it's just bland and all over the place!

And then all that fan-service thrown in there for no good reason other than to say "Hey look at how sexy and cute these girls are! They could be your waifus!"

Let me tell you that I did a search if anyone have even made a doujinshi of the girls of Taboo Tattoo and guess what? It doesn't exist! Zip! Nada! Not a single one!

And then we get to see a bunch of side characters left and right, and the show expects us to care for them just because they showed up and then get offed shortly thereafter? It made wonder if JC Staff thought that because Derpy Hooves was such a popular character in My Little Pony, despite being a background character, they think they can do the same with their cast of characters.

There is simply nothing in these characters that makes them anywhere likable. I will dare say that even if by some miracle, a hentai version of Taboo Tattoo ever existed, nobody's gonna care about it. All these characters in Taboo Tattoo? They're nothing more but empty shells without charm, or even a soul.

And Arya, the main antagonist, is an example of a really, REALLY badly written Mary Sue character. Mary Sues are very much frowned upon, but it can work if written exceptionally well. Just ask Batman and Saitama.

But Arya? She's like "Oh, I'm so perfect, you ain't got sh*t on me! Oh you got something to defeat me? Well f--k you, because I knew you were gonna do that and I even have a power-up to beat your ass!" God, it made me wish Saitama was there and punch her to oblivion because she is THAT annoying and hateful, she deserves to get even the cruelest of fates.

But no! Even in the final episode, she didn't even get her comeuppance. She just fled. That's it! Show's over! WTF?!

As for the plot, what is there to say? It's a mess and totally nonsensical. If this were a comedy like Inferno Cop, it wouldn't be so bad. But this is an action anime. And again, not a single part of the comedy is ever laughable.

I can only think that the reason this anime adaption of Taboo Tattoo ever existed is because it has lots of female characters, so JC Staff thinks letting these girls bring their melons and buns in all their glory, would easily attract that of the Otaku Community. I can't blame them since they did Food Wars, Slayers, and Ikkitousen, and they had a fanbase and doujinshis and all that stuff. But for Taboo Tattoo, it just fails to attract even the most hardcore of Otakus.

The only positive thing about Taboo Tattoo are its visuals as it's nowhere as bad as Berserk or Dragon Ball Super, by any means. But with its awful direction, writing, plot, and characters, Taboo Tattoo is just absolute garbage even a zombie wouldn't dare watch it even though the opening theme by May'n is not bad. If there ever was an award for Worst Anime of The Year, I would pick this one. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give Taboo Tattoo.....a minus 2. Seriously, don't watch this anime. It's that awful.

Berserk 2016 Season 1 Review

After 12 grueling episodes, the first season of Berserk  has come to an end, with a second season confirmed to air in the spring of next year. Though I would call this series as THE 2nd season since it is a follow up to the 90's anime and the movie remakes.

As you may or may not know, this version of Berserk is specifically meant for those who have read the original manga, watched the first anime series from the 1990's, or watched the movie trilogy - the latter two of which details the events of the first two arcs of the manga. So if you happen to have no idea what is going on, you need to read the manga, or watch the first anime series, or the movie trilogy.

As such, this latest incarnation of the Berserk anime takes place in the 3rd arc of the manga known as the "Conviction Arc". More specifically the latter part, as the very first part of the "Conviction Arc" was omitted. In fact, a good chunk of the manga have been omitted in all the incarnations of the Berserk Anime. Either it's because the stories are somewhat in the 'filler' territory as Guts goes on a few dark adventures that doesn't tie-in to the main plot, or that there are certain types of content in those stories that are just too taboo for TV or Film.

You have to remember that Japan's portrayal of sex and violence in TV and Film has changed over the years, unlike 20 years ago or more when it was more lax. I won't give too much details as it's a different subject altogether, but the short version is these changes were made in response to the pressure both Japan's Entertainment Industry, and its Government is receiving over such portrayals both from inside and outside the country.

Nevertheless, these 12 episodes mostly stay true to the events of the manga, so manga fans will be pleased with this portrayal. It's not without its problems, however.

In my first impressions review, I said that I wasn't bothered at all by the the awful CG animation in Berserk, because I was so used to seeing it in Anime like Knights of Sidonia and Ajin. That said, as the series progresses, the CG eventually becomes such an eyesore.

Now I'm not too knowledgeable on the makings of an animated series from a studio's point-of-view, so I don't know if using the CG in Berserk is made because it'scheaper and easier than traditional 2D animation, or because CG is cool and trending in most animation works. Studios like Pixar and Dreamworks have been doing CG films for ages now and have been very successful.

In any case, I am much more forgiving with Berserk's bad animation, and of course, the awful "CLANG!" sound effect whenever Guts swings his sword at something, whatever it is. It's so annoying it actually became a meme for a short time.

(NOTE: The following two paragraphs in brackets is not included in the video version of this review)

[The reason why I am more forgiving with Berserk's bad animation and sound effect, compared to say, Dragon Ball Super, is because the former makes up for it thanks to the incredibly dark plot and its cast of characters. The latter, on the other hand, while steadily improving over the past year, is still wobbly with regards to its writing, and the series is way too focused on Goku & Vegeta, while very little attention is given to the rest of the cast.

Besides, DBS is a shonen-anime, so certain themes have to be toned down for its target audience. You will never see Dragon Ball ever feature religious fanaticism, or how humans are capable of defying the odds stacked against them. Goku is an alien with superpowers fighting other characters with superpowers, whereas Guts has virtually no superpowers at all, and is forced to fight armies of human and demons alike.]

If you're a person of a certain age, than you will enjoy Berserk because it just fits with your way of thinking. Of course, younger viewers cannot comprehend the themes featured in Berserk, and they're not supposed to get into it anyway because of its not for the young ones.

Indeed, re-reading the manga chapters again before, and after seeing the final episodes make me appreciate the series even more and how it handles such themes.

One of those themes is religious fanaticism, where Berserk depicts how the humans who suffer by the demon horde were desperate to seek salvation, yet at the same time, they choose who they deem as their savior. This is seen between the two major characters and how the world of Berserk views them.

Griffith wants nothing more than to rule the world, even if it means killing off ALL of his comrades and commanding an entire army of demons and the undead. Guts, of course is the main protagonist of Berserk, but both his appearance and character gives him the impression in-universe that he is the bad guy. And yet, as Farnese says in her monlogue in the season finale, Guts gives a very reassuring aura, so to speak, that everything will be fine even in this time of great darkness, despite him being a pretty dark character himself.

Berserk does not give the message that you should turn away from religion, as portrayed in this arc and other stories. Rather, not to take the faith so blindly as to lose your own sense of reason. As Luca says it in the end scene, "God left humans enough free will to do what they need to do". There is no harm in praying for blessings and spiritual strength. But to get through even the greatest hardship, or a dire situation, it has to be done by our own hands. A later story in the manga, which will hopefully be picked up in the anime, explains why religion isn't entirely as bad as others might think.

The amount of gore, death counts, and even sexual violence, while obviously toned down in the anime for braodcasting reasons, is very much apparent in the manga. There is a major difference in which depictions of sex and violence in a fictional work are there for its own sake, or to help advance the story. In Berserk's case, it's not just the latter, but it also shows the state the world of Berserk is in. You can compare it to Game of Thrones in a sense, but the difference is that Berserk's world is darker, grittier, and there is no distinction on who gets the wrong end of the stick. Those that do receive it, get it in the most gruesome way possible.

I would dare say none of the factions from Game of Thrones could ever take down Guts, let alone the God Hand.

Such themes of a hellish world is not new, as it is featured in many other works. In anime and manga, it would be, for example, in the form of Go Nagai's Devilman and Violence Jack series. Others include "Now and Then, Here and There", "Hellsing", and "High School of The Dead", among others. What I could say is that the world of Berserk, and its message towards the audience, is very well done and very appreciated once understood.

Berserk is as much deep and philosophical as it is a visual experience. This is despite its very dark nature, and in the case of this new anime incarnation, its awful visuals, sound effects, and toned down, but still very mature content. It's truly not for everyone, but for the right audience, it is quite an epic. I am looking forward to how they will adapt the next arc. Until then, I will have a blast going back to the manga.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I give the 1st season of the 2016 version of Berserk, a 4 out of 5.

Milo Murphy's Law First Impressions

It hasn't aired on Disney XD yet, but the show's upcoming original series "Milo Murphy's Law", has the first two 11-minute episodes up on iTunes and Amazon, in the US of course. I was fortunate enough to see it in glorious HD and here's my first impressions of it.

Milo Murphy's Law stars Weird Al Yankovic as the voice of Milo, a teenager who happens to be a jinx. Though he already knows this and happens to get through his everyday life just fine. Even the entire town is aware of Milo being a jinx and they aren't concerned of it at all.

The first episode has claustrophobic Zack, played by Disney talent Mekai Curtis, experience Milo's bad luck first hand, while Milo's forgetful friend Melissa, played by Sabrina Carpenter, another Disney alumni, places bets on whether or not Milo and Zack make it to school on time. In the 2nd Episode, Milo's class heads for the Museum of Natural History, when not surprisingly, Milo's bad luck separates him, Zack, and Melissa from the rest of the class and now is thus off on a mini-adventure to get to the museum themselves.

You can clearly see the formula for this show - Milo and co. go someplace, Milo's bad luck kicks in, have a blast, and they get to their destination, no problem. Yes, this series will be episodic, but it's expected from Dan Povenmire and Jeff Marsh, the co-creators of Phineas & Ferb. Disney also prefers this kind of format, as shows like Wander Over Yonder can attest to.

Speaking of which, The Animation Guild blog reported that Disney is downsizing its animation workforce, outsourcing the production to smaller studios to save more money and to rake in more cash with its franchises. Taking note of that, I wouldn't be surprised if Milo Murphy's Law is going for 2 seasons tops, unless it's a megahit like Phineas & Ferb.

Frankly, I doubt the show will make it that far beyond 2 seasons. The formula is fine and all, but on paper it's not something that would make a lasting appeal. As much as I'm no longer paying attention to The Fairly Oddparents, its concept of two fairies giving wishes to a kid does have an appeal that continues to this day.

Also in the first episode, there are some noticeable animation errors. One scene has Milo and Zack totally covered in mud, and the whole thing gone by the next scenery. In the 2nd episode, Milo's backpack was crushed and buried by piles of rock, but was clearly seen carrying it in the next scene.

The show does have charm, though. Weird Al does pretty well playing a teenager in this series, which is also the first time in his voice-acting career that he gets to play the protagonist. The theme song, which Weird Al performs, is quite catchy and likable.

And of course, there's Melissa. Shortly after the first episode online, I'm already seeing plenty of fan art of her. Sorry, Candace. You've just been knocked off as favorite Disney 'waifu'.

Milo Murphy's Law may not be the megahit Disney expects from the duo behind Phineas & Ferb. But for what it's worth, the show is not bad at all. You can just relax, watch an episode, and feel good about it before you move on with whatever it is you're doing.

Milo Murphy's Law will premiere on Disney XD in the US October 3rd.

SUUUPPERRRRR INAZUMAA KIIIIIIIICK!

Yes, I am that excited that Gainax is doing a third "Aim For The Top" series after Gunbuster and Diebuster. If you haven't seen them yet, you should as this is one of the franchises that put Team Gainax on the map before Evangelion and Gurren Lagann (and before some of its members would branch out to form Studio TRIGGER).

It's not every day you see a mecha anime with really cool and likable female protagonists and both Gunbuster and Diebuster just fit the bill.

CN's New Original Series Stars Markiplier

Word has it this is the very first CN Original developed by a Mexican Studio and that Youtube Celebrity Markiplier will be among the voices. Don't have enough info beyond that, however.

The art reminds me of Invader Zim with a touch of Evil con Carne. As for Markiplier, I haven't seen him do actual voice-acting, but there have been videos of his Let's Plays being animated and made into skits.

Thoughts on Gumball's Final Seasons

Is The Amazing World of Gumball ending? The short answer is “Yes”. Last week, according to creator Ben Bocquelet’s Twitter after the airing of the two-part Season 4 finale, as you can see from this screenshot, he said in that tweet and I quote “Did you guys enjoy the double bill? Cos we got a lot more in store for our last season!"

Many of his followers from Twitter, myself included, began asking questions, to which he responded to some. In this next tweet you will see, he said that it was his decision to end the series after Season 6. He also made a few more saying the audience would end up getting sick and tired of the show, and he would like to pursue other projects. So Season 6 is the right time to properly end the series.

When asked of a possible movie, he answered “doubt it”. Though there are rumors that elements of the supposed movie will be incorporated to the series, much like the 8-part Stakes in Adventure Time. There is also word that the writing for Season 6 is actually finished, leaving only the recording and the animation process. Bocquelet ended the discussion saying that he will leave the show after Season 6, but Cartoon Network will still have the option to renew it for a Season 7, but without Bocquelet at the helm.

Personally, while I am saddened that Gumball is ending (at least for now), at the same time I’m very much ok with it and agree with Bocquelet. 6 Seasons is a whole lot and I don’t want Gumball to end up like the other shows that stale in quality due to having an extremely long run – Spongebob, Fairly Oddparents, Family Guy, South Park, etc.

Furthermore, in Bocquelet's case, seeing that Gumball is his first and currently his only work in animation, it's understandable why he wants to pursue other projects. Seth McFarlane started off working on Johnny Bravo before doing Family Guy, and has done very well for himself with his other works, such as the Ted movies. I find it a bit hard imagining what Rebecca Sugar would do after Steven Universe.

And really, when you look back at the show from the very beginning, they’ve gone a quite a long way from the very first season. From design, to humor, and even had an actual plot. As Gumball is the 2nd most watched CN Original behind Teen Titans GO, it’s considered as the counterpart to the Fairly Oddparents – both are very episodic shows with a subtle plot in the background. The difference is that one has threw the plot away in favor of just doing episodes, whereas the other has never forgotten it, and is slowly leading up to the big reveal.

That being said, the chances of Gumball to get a Season 7 order from Cartoon Network are likely because of its current status as the second most-watched series. With or without Ben Bocquelet, The Amazing World of Gumball is a cash cow for Cartoon Network and they do want to milk it dry.

On the other hand, if Cartoon Network does allow Bocquelet to end the series, it does give the channel brownie points for at least showing some respect to the shows’ creators, given the recent statuses of the other CN Originals like Uncle Grandpa and Regular Show.

Regardless as to whether or not The Amazing World of Gumball gets another season, I will follow the series at least up until the final episode that of which Ben Bocquelet is the showrunner. After which, I will clap my hands and say ‘Bravo’ to perhaps one of the best animated shows not just from Cartoon Network, but perhaps out of all the animated shows from this decade, and maybe even of all time! The title of the show pretty much describes it – it’s “Amazing”.

In case you haven't noticed, I've slowed down.

You're probably wondering why I haven't been posting here as of late, as is in Facebook and most especially on my Youtube channel. Well, I actually have to slow down my activities to a great degree.

I have obligations that will have me get occupied from morning until evening, with my downtime for chow and rest. It doesn't help that among them is me taking a 3-mile walk to another place (i don't have a vehicle and no public transport can take me to my destination) and back on weekdays.

On the bright side, all that walk will help me hatch my eggs in Pokemon Go, but sadly, there are like just 2 Pokestops and 99% of all spawns are common ones. I am thinking of taking advantage of my 6 mile (10km) walk by doing a watered-down version of Saitama's training regimen.

Nevertheless, this pretty much means doing news and videos will take a huge hit, and the weekends are the only dates that I really have free time unless something else comes up. I am looking for ways to make the most of my situation so I can continue to be consistent with my postings.

Again, sorry for the big slowdown, but I am working on it.
