Milo Murphy's Law First Impressions

It hasn't aired on Disney XD yet, but the show's upcoming original series "Milo Murphy's Law", has the first two 11-minute episodes up on iTunes and Amazon, in the US of course. I was fortunate enough to see it in glorious HD and here's my first impressions of it.

Milo Murphy's Law stars Weird Al Yankovic as the voice of Milo, a teenager who happens to be a jinx. Though he already knows this and happens to get through his everyday life just fine. Even the entire town is aware of Milo being a jinx and they aren't concerned of it at all.

The first episode has claustrophobic Zack, played by Disney talent Mekai Curtis, experience Milo's bad luck first hand, while Milo's forgetful friend Melissa, played by Sabrina Carpenter, another Disney alumni, places bets on whether or not Milo and Zack make it to school on time. In the 2nd Episode, Milo's class heads for the Museum of Natural History, when not surprisingly, Milo's bad luck separates him, Zack, and Melissa from the rest of the class and now is thus off on a mini-adventure to get to the museum themselves.

You can clearly see the formula for this show - Milo and co. go someplace, Milo's bad luck kicks in, have a blast, and they get to their destination, no problem. Yes, this series will be episodic, but it's expected from Dan Povenmire and Jeff Marsh, the co-creators of Phineas & Ferb. Disney also prefers this kind of format, as shows like Wander Over Yonder can attest to.

Speaking of which, The Animation Guild blog reported that Disney is downsizing its animation workforce, outsourcing the production to smaller studios to save more money and to rake in more cash with its franchises. Taking note of that, I wouldn't be surprised if Milo Murphy's Law is going for 2 seasons tops, unless it's a megahit like Phineas & Ferb.

Frankly, I doubt the show will make it that far beyond 2 seasons. The formula is fine and all, but on paper it's not something that would make a lasting appeal. As much as I'm no longer paying attention to The Fairly Oddparents, its concept of two fairies giving wishes to a kid does have an appeal that continues to this day.

Also in the first episode, there are some noticeable animation errors. One scene has Milo and Zack totally covered in mud, and the whole thing gone by the next scenery. In the 2nd episode, Milo's backpack was crushed and buried by piles of rock, but was clearly seen carrying it in the next scene.

The show does have charm, though. Weird Al does pretty well playing a teenager in this series, which is also the first time in his voice-acting career that he gets to play the protagonist. The theme song, which Weird Al performs, is quite catchy and likable.

And of course, there's Melissa. Shortly after the first episode online, I'm already seeing plenty of fan art of her. Sorry, Candace. You've just been knocked off as favorite Disney 'waifu'.

Milo Murphy's Law may not be the megahit Disney expects from the duo behind Phineas & Ferb. But for what it's worth, the show is not bad at all. You can just relax, watch an episode, and feel good about it before you move on with whatever it is you're doing.

Milo Murphy's Law will premiere on Disney XD in the US October 3rd.
