Ajin Season 2 Ep. 5 Thoughts

So after a series of episodes that mostly sees Nagai and Tosaki planning their countermeasure against Satou, this week's episode finally gives us....MORE PLANNING!

This has got to be the longest planning stage I've ever seen in an anime series. Even my personal favorite, Legend of The Galactic Heroes, has a much shorter planning stage than this. That being said, we do get something happening as the confrontation against Satou nears. That something, however, ends up complicating matters for Tosaki.

Last episode, we see two American agents, Myers and Almeida, arriving in Japan investigating the disappearance of Ogura. Tosaki's efforts to keep them at bay was unsuccessful as the Americans found out the ruse and kidnaps Tosaki while fatally wounding Shimomura. This comes at the worse time as Satou is about to make his move and for Nagai and company to do theirs as well.

For being Americans, the only thing "American" about Myers and Almeida are their character designs of being stereotypically blonde. Beyond that, however, they're more Japanese than what they appear. I know that most people working in the Anime and Manga industry rarely venture outside Japan, so their knowledge of foreigners is very much limited. But it's almost 2017 and people in the industry should know better by now.

Shimomura is given a chance to shine somewhat in this episode by putting her in a situation where she expresses a whole range of emotions, as opposed to what we normally see of her. As being the sole main female character, it's a nice gesture for viewers to connect with Shimomura, and why Nakano has a crush on her.

From what I can gather, Ajin's manga, which the anime is based on, is still ongoing, albeit at a very slow pace (almost as slow as Berserk's), so the pacing of the anime seems intentional so as to not to catch up. I'm not sure at this time if Ajin is good enough for anime studio Polygon Pictures to warrant a 3rd season.

On that note, whatever happened to Knights of Sidonia?
